Stories
Storytelling has always been a big part of our culture. It is a significant building block in understanding who we are and where we came from, about our ancestors, the culture and how they lived. Unfortunately and particularly as it relates to the Beothuck, we have very few recordings of the stories. The following are the exception.
Stories Retold by Matthew Howse
Matthew Howse holds a Master’s degree in Folklore from Memorial University of Newfoundland. He currently operates Broken Books in downtown St. John’s. In the spring and summer of 2011 Mr. Howse travelled throughout the island collecting stories about the Beothuk. He retells four of these in the recordings below (included with permission).
